What Is Subud
Music > LP
Condition: NM
Cover Condition: EX
Label: Hanover
Reference Number: M 5003
Country: US

Very rare original and only pressing. Record is very clean and has no marks. Cover has a 1/2 inch piece of tape in the top right corner and several of the lines in the liner notes have been underlined. Fascinating discussion by two true intellectuals of the belief system of Subud which is a spiritual movement that has no teaching, no theory and no dogma and yet has centers all over the world. At one point Bennett describes Subud as a "Spiritual chain reaction". A descriptive quote from the Subud website, "SUBUD is an abbreviation of the words Susila, Budhi and Dharma. Subud is not a new religion nor a sect of any religion; nor is it a teaching. It is only a symbol for the possibility for mankind to follow the right way of living."

Man & Mask Forty Years in the Life of a Singer
Memorabilia > Books
Condition: VG+/EX-
Cover Condition: VG+
Label: Alfred A. Knopf
Country: US
Date: 1932

First American edition. Translated from French by Phyllis Megroz. Grey cloth cover has embossed red print. Slight discoloration/light soiling. Dust jacket has several chips missing, largest is visible in the image at the top of the cover at about 1 inch. Creases and small tears, minor to moderate foxing in DJ. Dust jacket has protective plastic film covering it, but not adhering to it. Binding is secure. Paper inside covers is discolored to light tan. Pages are white to off-white and supple. 1/2 inch tear in bottom edge of last three pages (does not affect or touch print). Includes a number of black-and-white photographs. 358 pages. Newspaper clipping pasted inside front cover: "Chaliapin sad over exile; to Russia? Never." Newspaper clipping of death-day article pasted behind first title page. Newspapers are not noted.

This book comes from the private collection of the legendary jazz clarinetist and Jazz Hall of Fame inductee, Kenny Davern. While Kenny was best known as a jazz musician who worked with everyone from Jack Teagarden to Steve Lacy, he attributes David Weber, principal solo clarinetist with the New York City Ballet Orchestra as his most influential teacher. He and I would listen to mostly classical music when we visited and discussed the differences in interpretations by various conductors. Kenny's knowledge of classical music was encyclopaedic, particularly of the work of conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler whose works lined the walls of his music room.
